i'd like to have a bulletin-board sized map of my neighborhood (Lake Merritt, Oakland area) and plot various trees (color code etc). Anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this?

well, there are a lot of ways to do this, some involve $$$ and some dont. well i can give you the non money idea first, if this is for a civic or non profit group you might be able to squeak out a student to do the work as a project, otherwise you can attempt to mess with google maps or something of the like. depends how much learning overhead you want, but it is pretty steep. otherwise the mapping/GIS software is way too expensive to get yourself. i work at SFSU geography dept, and we can try and set something up with a student, or if you want something more professional we the staff can put something together for cash.

    lemme know
    Jesse

ps. do you have the tree data or do you have to make it still?
